When we welcomed the first day of Spring this week, I was psyched about how fortunate we are to enjoy this beautiful, sunny weather in Florida. And then that much-needed rain came the day after, and I was reminded of how every everything around us is in a constant cycle of rebirth. This is the perfect time to plant seeds in our gardens. But it also is the time of year that home sellers and home buyers should plant the seeds that will grow a successful real estate transaction. Judging by how busy THE Gail Spada TEAM has been lately, the Hernando County housing market appears to be experiencing its own cycle of rebirth. Homeowners who have been sitting on the fence about placing their home on the market should understand that now is one of the best times of the year to make their move. The time is ripe … Continue reading
“I don’t think much of a man who is not wiser today than he was yesterday.” That is one of my favorite quotations by President Abraham Lincoln. And I share his sentiment wholeheartedly. Self-improvement, professionally and personally, is both a privilege and an obligation. I look forward to learning something new every day and I am thankful when it happens. At the same time, I pity the poor souls who are content to stop learning; they are denying themselves and those around them the opportunity for a richer, more rewarding life. That’s a long-winded lead-in to share with you that I am about to burst with anticipation of an upcoming learning experience. In about a week I will be in New Orleans for the 2012 Century 21 Global Conference! I’ve attended this event in other cities over the years and I always come away amazed at what I have learned, … Continue reading
Melissa Rodgers was already a fan of THE Gail Spada TEAM on Facebook. The 37-year-old Palm Harbor resident says she has two reasons for regularly reading The TEAM Works blog. First, Melissa and her husband own a home inspection and pest control business, and she finds the consumer-driven real estate information published here useful. Second, Melissa is an animal lover and “anytime I see someone who is donating their time and money to help the local humane society,” I try to support them, said Melissa, a native Floridian who is the human companion of Snowflake, a 5-year-old, 6-pound Maltese. Now, Melissa’s decision to be a TEAM fan has paid off in a new way. Melissa is the winner of our 2011 TEAM Christmas Photo Contest. Her winning entry earns her a 4GB Flip MinoHD Video Camera. The photo is of Melissa and her 7-month-old grand niece, Abby. The photo was … Continue reading
I’ve occupied a seat in a theater, a booth in a restaurant, a berth on cruise ship and occasionally a lavatory on an airplane. I have occupied my time while waiting to do something else. In novels and newspapers I have read about occupied territories. And, I will admit, my mind sometimes has been preoccupied by other thoughts as I go about my daily routine. But until recently, the word “occupy” just hasn’t cropped up much. That’s all changed now because of the Occupy Wall Street movement, which this weekend will mark the 3-month anniversary of its encampment in Manhattan. Since then the movement has spread across nation and around the globe. I won’t pretend that I fully understand what all the fuss is about. Like most of you, I glean what I can from media reports. But I do recognize that this protest is fueled, at least in part, … Continue reading
This is the time of year when we Floridians just LOVE to tune in The Weather Channel. While most of us savor a little sweater weather, one of our guilty pleasures is to see our neighbors Way Up There dealing with a thing we don’t have Way Down Here — snow! But even though we won’t be shoveling snow or sloshing through slush, Hernando County residents know that winter still brings relatively cold weather, and a few days of freezing temperatures are almost a certainty. In recent years we have endured multiple days of “hard-freezes,” where the temperature drops into the 20s for several consecutive nights. Although citrus growers don’t like to see the harsh weather arrive, they are prepared for it, and they know what steps to take to protect their crop. Less prepared are the homeowners who want to protect the plants in their gardens. A little preparation … Continue reading
Halloween is not until Monday, but this weekend will be a delicious blur of costume parties, sugar-highs and campy chit-chat about ghosts, goblins and ghouls. It’s silly, but it’s fun to feed our fascination with being scared, or at least scary, while pretending for a short time to be something we’re not. But even though Halloween comes just once a year, I think most real estate professionals will tell you that scary behavior and pretenders are a too-frequent occurrence as they deal with customers who are buying or selling homes. Don’t get me wrong; it’s not like people intend to be evil or misrepresent themselves. It just happens, sort of the same way some folks can’t resist using bad puns when telling Halloween jokes. To wit: Q: What is a baby vampire’s favorite part of a house? A: The bat-room! But it’s not bad jokes or things that go “bump” … Continue reading
Baby Boomers have long dictated the demands and supplies of the U.S. economy. From healthcare to technology to entertainment to transportation and food, if Boomers wanted it, we’ve made it happen. So, it’s no surprise that many experts are looking to the Boomer generation to help determine how and when the housing market will fully recover. Without a doubt, Boomers, now aged 46-65, will be a factor. The decisions they make about when and where to retire, how they invest their savings and how to protect their assets will significantly shape the real estate landscape. But there are strong indications that the group of Americans coming behind the Baby Boomers, Generation X, also will play a meaningful role in sustaining the housing market. There are not as many Gen-Xers as there are Boomers, but their buying power is increasing, and their preferences for home design and features will influence what … Continue reading
Our logo says it all: The TEAM Works blog has always been about you. Nearly everything written here is aimed at making our readers better consumers as it relates to being more knowledgeable about buying, selling or improving their property. We believe informed consumers make informed choices, and we want to do our part to keep you informed. For the past 6 months we’ve shared useful consumer information about such varied topics as: how the stock market is affecting the local housing market; investor-savvy home improvements; how to communicate expertly with your REALTOR®; the sinkhole housing crisis; which smart phone apps are essential for buyers and sellers; the importance of sellers pet-prepping their homes; what sellers can learn from first-time offers; how to impress buyers with your garage; the potential pitfalls of social media; incentives sellers can offer buyers; the advantage of sellers dealing only with pre-qualified buyers; preparing your … Continue reading
Isn’t it ironic that the policyholders who pay Citizens Property Insurance to insure their homes against the threat of sinking into the ground, now find that the real threat of losing their home may come from the insurer itself? The request by Citizens Property Insurance to increase premiums for its 94,000 customers in the Tampa Bay region has gone from predatory to just plain greedy. Time is running short for residents to stand up to these out-of-touch bureaucrats who oversee the state-run property insurer. They either don’t know or don’t care that charging such exorbitant fees will result in losing most of their customers, or putting a huge financial strain on the ones who remain. Citizens’ board of governors also seems indifferent to the possibility that their actions will negatively impact the housing market, especially in Hernando County and Pasco County, where the steepest premium increases are proposed. I wrote … Continue reading
The past couple of weeks have been delightfully hectic. Not only has our TEAM been super busy helping real estate customers, I have been fortunate to spend every other waking minute embracing three of my lifelong passions. Passion #1 – Family: Our daughter, Kristin, son-in-law, Krishna, and our beautiful baby granddaughter Arya visited from Up North. We had so much fun cooking, shopping, swimming and watching Arya learn to crawl. And my 82-year-old parents were right there with us as we shared this priceless family time. Passion #2 – Furry friends: Meanwhile, we’ve been busy working with the Humane Society of the Nature Coast as we prepare for the 8th Annual Fur Ball, which will be held Saturday, Sept. 10 at The Palace Grand in Spring Hill. This is the second event this year that THE Gail Spada TEAM is proud to have sponsored for this wonderful organization, which does … Continue reading
